Reddington kept a log of the USS Vandalia, a screw sloop, from the day she was launched in the Boston Naval Yard until he left the ship in Feb. 1879. He records significant dates in the ship's route as part of the European Squadron. Among the events was the boarding of former U.S. President General Ulysses S.
